A Dream Anchored in History: The Chios Maritime Museum stands as a testament to the vision of prominent shipping families. They dreamt of a grand house-museum dedicated to showcasing the rich maritime heritage of modern Greece.
A Neoclassical Gem Reborn: Housed in the beautifully restored, early 20th-century residence of Anastassis and Marouko Pateras, the museum exemplifies Chios’ neoclassical style with its elegant painted ceilings. Recent renovations have transformed both the interior spaces and the garden to create an inviting atmosphere for exhibits that celebrate the island’s long and distinguished maritime and commercial tradition.
Treasures of the Sea: The museum boasts a valuable collection donated by a cultural association (PEKEV), complemented by additional exhibits like ship models and various nautical artifacts.
A Haven for Maritime Knowledge: Delve deeper into the world of maritime history on the museum’s first floor, where a library awaits. This collection, initiated by the late Efstathios Batis with his personal library donation in 2004, has grown to include over 3,500 books. Primarily in Greek with some foreign language selections, the library focuses on nautical themes alongside some general topics. Efstathios Batis continued to expand the collection until his passing, ensuring a rich resource for visitors. A public reading room allows you to comfortably explore these maritime treasures.
